Dear Student/Parent:
This year, the Science Department will have summer work for incoming sophomores similar to the “summer reading” and math work assigned for various grade levels. As you may know, students must take the Science OGT test in the spring of their sophomore year. The Science OGT covers topics in Life Science, Physical Science, and Earth/Space Science, as well as Scientific Ways of Thinking. Since students usually take Earth/Space Science in middle school, students seem to need a refresher on that information the most prior to taking the Science OGT their sophomore year. Therefore, the “Summer Reading/Science” Assignment for incoming sophomores involves the following: 1) Read the PDF Documents about the Air and Space Environments, complete the accompanying worksheets. 2) Watch the listed earth and space science videos online and complete worksheets to help you summarize the information. 3) Read the information provided at the link on the right and complete the study guide worksheet to help you summarize the information. Finally, to receive credit, you must go online to complete follow-up assessments at www.quia.com. The class page is http://www.quia.com/pages/rbscience/page1 You must enter your username (your lowercase full name without spaces, followed by 738 example: sararussell738) and your ID# (merit number) as password to login, and then you must take the quizzes (based on the completed worksheets) in order to receive credit. The completion of the summer assignment and quizzes will count as a test grade on your 1st Quarter Grade in science next fall. If you have limited access to internet, you may try a local library or you may also contact RBHS to use a computer in the library during office hours during the summer. All requirements, including completion of the assessments on QUIA should be completed before returning to school on August 21, 2013. If you have any questions, feel free to email me at [email protected] Sincerely, Sara Russell Science Department Chair |
